1- Project Details

The project was initiated by Aga Khan NGO to provide safe drinking water to underserved communities in Syria by treating deep well water that presented significant physical and chemical challenges. The objective was to develop a reliable and efficient treatment solution to make the water safe for human consumption, while ensuring ease of operation in remote areas.

2- Customer Need

The end user needed a complete turnkey system capable of managing high temperatures, elevated hydrogen sulfide (Hâ‚‚S) content, and mineral-rich water. The system also had to address odor, corrosion risks, and sedimentation, while delivering consistent drinking water quality to rural populations.

3- Challenge

The main challenge was treating hot, sulfur-rich well water with high Hâ‚‚S concentration by cooling the high-temperature feed, stripping dissolved gases like hydrogen sulfide, minimizing mineral scaling and sediment buildup, and ensuring reliable operation in remote areas with limited infrastructure.

4- AQUALINE Solution

AQUALINE Water Technology provided an advanced water treatment system engineered to address the unique challenges of high-temperature, sulfur-rich well water. The solution integrated a cooling tower to reduce water temperature, a lamella clarifier for efficient sediment separation, multi-stage filtration to remove suspended solids and reduce scaling potential, and a reverse osmosis (RO) unit to ensure the final treated water meets drinking standards. The system was designed for automated operation, high efficiency, and adaptability to remote, infrastructure-limited locations.

5- Impact & Environmental Effect

  • Provided safe and clean drinking water to vulnerable populations

  • Eliminated health risks associated with untreated sulfur-rich water

  • Supported sustainable use of deep groundwater resources

  • Enhanced quality of life and sanitation in rural communities

6- Performance

All six units are operating reliably, consistently producing high-quality drinking water from challenging raw sources. The systems have demonstrated stable performance, low operational intervention, and effective handling of extreme raw water conditions.
