Reducing Hardness in Municipal Water for a Drinking Water Factory in Iraq

Project Overview

  • Type: Water Treatment System

  • Source: Municipal Water

  • Application: Drinking Water

  • Capacity: 720 CMD

  • Scope of Work: Design, Supply,

  • Location: Iraq

  • Sector:  Private

  • Project Status: finished

1- Project Details

This project was executed for a drinking water treatment factory in Iraq, where the objective was to improve the quality of municipal source water by reducing hardness levels, specifically calcium and magnesium, before further treatment or bottling. The factory required a reliable solution to ensure water consistency and protect downstream treatment components.

2- Customer Need

The client needed a solution to treat municipal water with elevated hardness, which posed risks to equipment and negatively impacted water taste and scaling potential. The system had to deliver continuous operation, be easy to maintain, and ensure stable hardness reduction to meet drinking water quality standards.

3- Challenge

The main challenge was removing calcium and magnesium ions from a variable municipal water source, while maintaining a consistent flow to support round-the-clock production. The system also needed to be:

  • Space-efficient and suitable for integration into the existing facility

  • Capable of alternating operation to provide uninterrupted supply

  • Simple to operate and maintain with minimal downtime

4- AQUALINE Solution

AQUALINE Water Technology delivered a Duplex Softener System with a total capacity of 720 CMD, configured as 2 sets of 360 CMD each. The system operates on an alternating basis—one unit in service while the other regenerates—ensuring continuous hardness removal and optimized resin usage.

5- Impact & Environmental Effect

By reducing hardness, the system extends the life of downstream treatment units (such as RO membranes), improves system efficiency, and ensures compliance with drinking water standards. It also reduces chemical dosing and maintenance needs, making the factory’s operations more sustainable.

6- Performance

Since commissioning, the system has delivered stable, softened water output with minimal operator intervention. It consistently maintains calcium and magnesium levels within target limits, supporting high-quality drinking water production for the facility.
