Treated Sewage Effluent Reuse System for Cooling at a Major Traditional Market in Qatar

Project Overview

  • Type: Treated Sewage Effluent

  • Source: Treated Sewage Water

  • Application: Cooling Tower Feed Water

  • Capacity: 1600 CMD

  • Scope of Work: Design, Assembling, Supervision

  • Location: Qatar

  • Sector: Privet - Big Tradition Market

  • Project Status: Finished

1- Project Details

This project was implemented to serve a major traditional market complex in Qatar, where treated sewage water is reused as feed water for cooling towers. The system ensures high-purity output suitable for cooling applications while supporting sustainable water management in a landmark cultural and commercial area.

2- Customer Need

The client required a reliable system to transform treated sewage effluent into water suitable for cooling towers, minimizing the use of fresh water and aligning with national sustainability goals. The solution needed to be compact, operate under urban constraints, and provide stable performance to support continuous cooling operations.

3- Challenge

The key challenge was converting treated sewage effluent still containing organics, fine particulates, and dissolved solids into water clean enough for cooling tower use, while ensuring the system could operate reliably, fit within space limitations, and run continuously with minimal maintenance.

4- AQUALINE Solution

AQUALINE Water Technology delivered a custom-built treatment system utilizing Activated Carbon Filtration (ACF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) to achieve multi-stage purification. ACF removes chlorine, organics, and odors; UF eliminates turbidity, suspended solids, and pathogens; and RO delivers low-TDS water suitable for sensitive cooling equipment. The system, comprising two sets of 800 CMD each, was designed, assembled, and supervised by AQUALINE, enabling smooth integration and efficient, cost-effective operation.

5- Impact & Environmental Effect

The project helps conserve freshwater by repurposing treated sewage water for non-potable use, reducing operational costs, and supporting Qatar’s environmental and sustainability targets. It also serves as a reference model for water reuse in other urban facilities.

6- Performance

The system operates with stable output quality and minimal downtime, providing reliable performance to meet the daily cooling needs of the major traditional market complex.
