1- Project Details

This project was developed to serve a major shopping mall in Qatar, one of the region’s largest retail complexes, by providing high-quality water for its cooling towers located in the underground parking area. The system utilizes treated sewage water coming from a nearby power plant, transforming it into water suitable for industrial cooling applications, while contributing to water conservation and sustainable infrastructure goals.

2- Customer Need

The client required a sustainable water treatment solution that could reuse existing treated sewage water (TSE) and convert it into high-purity water to feed cooling towers serving the mall and parking facilities. Given Qatar’s limited freshwater resources, the solution needed to be efficient, compact, and compliant with technical and environmental standards for reuse in cooling applications.

3- Challenge

The primary challenge was to further purify already treated sewage effluent still containing organics, fine particulates, and dissolved solids into water suitable for cooling towers, while ensuring the system could operate reliably in a high-demand commercial setting, fit within limited urban space, and maintain continuous performance with minimal maintenance.

4- AQUALINE Solution

AQUALINE Water Technology delivered a custom-engineered treatment system that combines Activated Carbon Filtration (ACF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) to achieve multi-stage purification of treated sewage water. The ACF stage removes residual chlorine, organics, and odors; UF acts as a physical barrier to suspended solids, turbidity, and pathogens; and RO produces high-purity, low TDS water ideal for cooling tower applications. The system was designed, assembled, and supervised by AQUALINE, ensuring seamless integration into the client’s cooling infrastructure, with reliable performance, efficient operation, and minimal operating costs.

5- Impact & Environmental Effect

This project supports Qatar’s water reuse vision by:
-
Reducing strain on freshwater resources
-
Lowering operating costs for cooling systems
-
Promoting responsible wastewater management
-
Serving as a model for commercial-scale water recycling in urban settings

6- Performance

The system consistently produces high-purity water suitable for cooling towers, achieving stable operation, minimal downtime, and excellent membrane performance due to the high-quality pretreatment stages.
